Man of Honour
The Rise of the Brides Man
It’s 2019, traditional weddings are kind of a thing of the past. There are a wealth of new wedding trends out there nowadays from micro hen parties and weddings to non-traditional bridal groups which include a best woman instead of a best man and a man of honour instead of a maid.
Many of us gals have a good friend who is male and who’s to say that only the groom can have his favourite lads stood beside him on his big day. Mixed bridal parties are becoming increasingly popular and frankly, here at Team Hen, we’re a little bit surprised that having a man of honour isn’t a trend that has taken off sooner.
Here’s how and why you should break tradition and mix up your bridal party for your big day.
Male Bestie
No-one quite provides the emotional support, honest opinions and essential help you will need during the big day like your best friend. So, who cares if that person’s male?! He might be a close family member such as your brother, or just someone you’ve grown up with and need next to you on one of the most important moments of your life.
Eye for Detail
While your best girl friends are the ideal shopping partners when it comes to your wedding gown, it’s always great to get the opinion of the opposite sex. Though your man of honour may not want to go dress shopping they’ll be more than happy to give you an honest opinion on your final choices and help you whittle it down.
If they’re close with your partner too, they’ll be able to give you advice on whether or not they think the groom will love it.
Men also have an eagle eye for what styles you tend to usually wear best in your everyday life. It’s easy for a bride to get caught up in some of the glitzy and glamorous wedding gowns and end up picking something that doesn’t actually suit her. The man of honour will pick up on this and point you in the right direction.
Putting it into Practice
Having a man of honour is a completely different ball game to having a maid of honour. Yes, they will be your go-to person for anything you need on the day and will offer support and try to keep your nerves to a minimum, but there’s a lot of things that are going to be different about his role.
It’s worth discussing what events he wants to help plan. For example, do you want him to plan your hen party? Will he be invited? If you’re having a bridal shower too, you’ll need to see if he wants to plan that. Our opinion is that having a man plan the festivities would be a modern and unconventional twist on a traditional wedding and may mean that you get to do something you or your bridal party never would have usually planned.
Suits You Sir
When it comes to his suit, he should wear the same outfit as the groomsmen but with a key indicator showing that he’s part of the bridal party instead. Usually this is done by having different colour ties/dresses for the bride’s side and the groom’s side so that guests can easily differentiate.
What are your thoughts on breaking tradition and going with a man instead of a maid of honour?
